The Healthy Homes Standard released this autumn by the Government represents a significant shift in UK housing policy, establishing design requirements that prioritise occupant health, environmental sustainability and long-term wellbeing. For WeberHaus, this has always been standard practice. As a manufacturer of sustainable, energy-efficient, prefabricated houses, we have decades of experience in creating homes that support healthier, more comfortable and more sustainable living.
The standard focuses on five core themes that directly impact quality of life, all of which have been integral to WeberHaus design for over six decades.
Energy efficiency
The standard requires all new homes to achieve a minimum EPC rating of A, with best practice aiming for Passivhaus certification (maximum space heating demand of 15 kWh/m² per year). WeberHaus is able to adapt designs to Passivhaus standards delivering exceptional thermal performance that translates into lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint.
Future-proof accessibility
All homes must comply with the prescribed accessibility standards, ensuring they are adaptable to evolving mobility needs over time. Our clients often build homes that adapt to life's changes - for example ageing, multigenerational living, or different ability needs. This flexibility is integrated into every WeberHaus design.
Thoughtful space options
While UK homes typically have a smaller footprint than those in Germany or other European countries, storage and adequate room for daily living remains essential. Nick Blunt, our designer, has been praised by clients for his innovative ideas for maximising living space, ensuring that their home is functional.
Natural light and material comfort
This standard ensures that natural light reaches living spaces throughout the day. Large windows and thoughtful design features that harness natural light are central to every WeberHaus home, creating spaces that connect effortlessly with their surroundings.
Indoor air quality
The scheme states that the preferred ventilation strategy is high-efficiency MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery) systems designed to Passivhaus standards. MVHR systems have been standard in our homes for decades. These systems deliver fresh, filtered air while recovering up to 95% of heat energy—eliminating condensation, mould, and allergens, all while maintaining a consistently comfortable indoor environment.
The Healthy Homes Standard affirms what we’ve been practicing for generations: the quality of your home directly influences your health and wellbeing. It’s encouraging to see UK housing policy in 2025 finally aligning with these long-standing principles. Building with WeberHaus means going beyond the Healthy Homes Standard—investing in proven German engineering and decades of expertise. Our reputation is built on more than 41,000 homes constructed in Germany, and over a decade of delivering the same high standards here in the UK.
